The Dram Road
Published in Hardcover by Olympic Marketing Corporation (June, 1983)
Author: Louise Lawrence
Average review score:

Review
It is a really touching book. It is light reading, but it can be start many conversations or thoughts that extend very deep. Louise Lawrence has a different, new writing style that is unlike any other.

a wonderful book
This was one of my favorites growing up, and I must have checked it out of the library 4 or times over the years. A teenager (young man?) commits a crime in the city and runs away to the country, where he develops a relationship with an old man. There's a paranormal twist which I only vaguely remember with the old man's long dead child, but the heart of the story as I remember it 10 years later is this irresponsible thug learning to act like a human being... so a good read with a positive message, what else can you ask for in childrens' books?

Ducks on a Pond: Towards a Theatrical Engagement
Published in Paperback by Distributed Art Publishers (October, 1992)
Author: Lawrence Weiner
Average review score:

The Conceptual Essence
I have been a fan of lawrence weiner for years, but he really has out-done himself with this visually stunning book. he has captured the essence of art without iluting the "essence" of it. Some of his chapters could be called mini-performances, themselves. Weiner organizes his subject into conceptual chapters that keep the material from falling into strictly a popular phenomenon. A must buy for academics and non-academics alike. A great Christmas gift for an art lover. The pictures in this book are gorgeous and fun. A real treat.

Dynamic Defense at Bridge
Published in Paperback by Devyn Pr (March, 1991)
Author: Mike Lawrence
Average review score:

Improve your bridge defense
How experts think when defending. Recommended for all levels.

This book will tutor you in thinking like expert defender.
You sit, mentally, at the author's elbow while he shares pearls of wisdom on knotty defensive problems that come up frequently at the bridge table. The great merit of this book is that it doesn't just tell you what to do in a mechanical sense, it guides you in how to think and base your defense on inferences and deductions. I have read it 5 times and gained incremental benefit each time. The exposition is lucid and cogent. Get two copies and give one to your favorite partner.

Earth at Risk: An Environmental Dialogue Between Religion and Science
Published in Hardcover by Humanity Books (April, 2000)
Authors: Donald B. Conroy and Rodney Lawrence Petersen
Average review score:

At Risk
This is an excellent introduction to the concerns of religion and ecology. The volume has leading authors survey topics of religion and science, mutli-religious perspectives on the topic, religion and ethics, and religion and educational policy respecting the topic. The book is ideal for schools and discussion groups.

An important question for religion
This book, with chapters from a wide variety of scholars of religion, ecology, and science, is a great introduction to the interaction between ecology and faith. This book will be a rewarding read for anyone interested in how religion must cope with the environmental crisis, as well as those who (wrongly) think that religion has nothing to say about ecology.

The Electronic Republic: Reshaping Democracy in the Information Age
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (September, 1996)
Author: Lawrence K. Grossman
Average review score:

Excellent and Thought Provoking
This book provides a great deal of insight into the impact polling and the internet have/can have on our political processes. One of his most important points is: what good does it do to have a public who can participate in the process on a whim and with ease when that public is still not educated about the issues involved? These are issues we should all be concerned about and carefully consider as the internet in particular grows in importance to us and to our political participation. Is this trend towards reliance on the media, instant polling, internet feedback really a good thing? This book provides us with the tools to find the answer ourselves. A great, thought provoking book who's issues should be carefully weighed as we consider voting over the internet and reliance upon public opinion polls.

A serious appraisal of civil society in the Information Age
Few books on "wired" subjects focus as intensely as this one on the content of electronic media and its impact on democracy. Grossman gives compelling suggestions for reinvigorating democracy by improving the delivery of information and the involvement of citizens through electornic communications. Very well-written and instructive with plenty of suggestions for further reading. Fascinating review of the parallel history of democracy and the media in this country, as well as the earliest democractic institutions in ancient Athens.

Empire Builders (Bookcassette(r) Edition)
Published in Audio Cassette by Bookcassette Sales (May, 1900)
Authors: Ben Bova and Robert Lawrence
Average review score:

Excellant Novel
This is really a unique novel. I don't recall reading anything by Ben Bova before this book. After reading this novel I decided that Mr. Bova wrote a good novel and I bought several more of his titles to see if he is consistent. Well, that is not the point of this review. This is a review of 'Empire Builders' not Ben Bova.

What a really good novel this was. The protagonist Dan Randolf is a wonderful creation on Bova's part, as a previous reviewer noted. I don't know how much of the science involved in the book is realistic but it was written in such a way that I found it believable. The motives of the key players were logical and the plot made sense. What more can you ask for.

Amazon did an adequate job of giving the plot overview so I won't waste your time here with the same. I will only add that this novel succeeds in nearly every particular. As you are reading the novel you are constantly confronted with actions and reactions that are surprising to you, as the reader, but seem like the only logical event after reading them. A definite recommend on my part.

Typical Bova--Excellent
The best thing about this book is how Bova is able to please the entire political spectrum on the enviromental issues that are addressed in the book. Left wingers will be pleased that the plot includes pending enviromental catastrophe caused by humanity's excesses while right wingers will be pleased that the solution is more freedom, not less. Dan Randolf, the main character of the book, is the best protagonist Bova has ever created.

Errol Flynn: The Movie Posters
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Bassoff Collection (July, 1995)
Authors: Lawrence Bassoff and Stewart Granger
Average review score:

The Best Flynn Book
Although this large-scale art book focuses on Errol Flynn's movie posters, it manages to be the best book out there on Flynn's career. There is an evocative introduction by Stewart Granger, good essays on Flynn's bio and on the Warner Bros. poster style (which was, sadly, the weakest of the major U.S. studios in the movies' golden age). There are beautiful reproductions of the posters and lobby cards themselves, from an impressively detailed collection (with samples of other swashbuckling movie posters for comparison). And finally, there are essays on each of Flynn's films that are fond, witty, and succinct. Beyond all this, though, it's the best Flynn book because it provides a clear and objective look at the trajectory of a remarkable career. It's amazing to see Flynn's image placed front and center on the poster of his first starring film, "Captain Blood," and it's both hilarious and heartbreaking to see the Dorian Grey-like image on his last, "Cuban Rebel Girls." Bassoff is that rare thing: a committed fan who loves his subject and gives him his due, but is far from star-struck. A great book.

A masterpiece
This is a prestigious classy book and it's handsomely put together. The book will be a great collector's item.

Errol Flynn is Hollywood's greatest legend because he is a nostalgic, handsome, dashing, daring action hero.

Essential Adam Smith
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (February, 1987)
Authors: Robert L. Heilbroner, Laurence J. Malone, and Lawrence J. Malone
Average review score:

Condensed Capitalism
To understand capitalism, read the Wealth of Nations. But, to really understand it, as well as the other ideas of Adam Smith, read his essential works. This book allows the reader to fully grasp the concepts of capitalism and get a clear picture of how and why it works. Thankfully, Heilbronner did not dilute the works of Smith, he just condensed them for the modern day reader. With this book you can cut through the jargon and see the real points that Smith was trying to get across.

A Great Introduction to Adam Smith's Ideas
After reading Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers, I decided to read Smith's Wealth of Nations, but found myself daunted by the length and language of the book. Then I discovered Heilbroner's Essential Adam Smith and was hooked. The book offers the essential parts of Wealth of Nations, as well as a good sampling of some of his other works. As a result, I have not only read the entire Wealth several times, but have also read everything by and about Smith that I can find. Heilbroner's book is a good way to get to the heart of Smith's thinking, but, like me, you will probably find yourself wanting to learn more about the man, his ideas, and his life. Enjoy!
